Am I Too Old for Breast Augmentation?

Mature woman smiling
It’s easy to assume that you’ve waited too long to get
breast augmentation. After all, many people think this procedure is reserved for women in their 20s and 30s. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Breast augmentation surgery doesn’t have an age limit.

Breast Augmentation Age Breakdown

Breast augmentation is a great way to achieve fuller and rounder breasts at nearly any age. It’s not just young women who are having this popular procedure. Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that 28% of breast augmentation patients in 2020 were between the ages of 40 and 54. Meanwhile, only 27% were between the ages of 20 and 29.

There are many reasons to get breast implants later in life. For example, you may be interested in restoring the volume or shape that you lost due to things like pregnancy, weight changes, and age. It might be easier to take time off for recovery. And you won’t need to plan around having kids.

Special Considerations for Older Patients

Breast implants can offer many benefits to patients after age 40 or 50. However, they also come with some unique considerations. In particular, you’ll need to mention your implants when you get a mammogram. Your technician will need to use special techniques during the imaging process. Rest assured that it’s very unlikely for the mammography device to cause a rupture.

Keep in mind that breast augmentation won’t have a significant effect on sagging or drooping. That’s why older women often choose to pair their breast augmentation with breast lift surgery

A breast lift can remove excess skin and elevate the breast contour for a more youthful look. This combination approach may be able to completely rejuvenate the appearance of your breasts.

Woman smiling outside winter
There are many things to dislike about winter. The sky is overcast, the temperature is cold, and there are few social events on your calendar. But these same factors make it the perfect time of the year to have a cosmetic procedure such as
breast augmentation! Here are three great reasons to schedule your breast augmentation surgery before spring arrives in a few months.

1. It Can Be Easier to Manage the Recovery

You will need to follow a few aftercare measures to support amazing breast augmentation results. In the colder months, it can be a lot easier to accommodate these important steps.

For example, you will likely need to wear dressings, bandages, and surgical garments. Fortunately, it is much more comfortable to layer up during the winter than during the summer. An oversized sweatshirt can also hide any swelling for a more discreet recovery.

2. There Might Be More Room in Your Schedule

The warmer months bring their fair share of events and important get-togethers. Weddings and graduations crop up during the spring. Even vacations are more common.

However, the same cannot be said for these few dull months at the start of each year. If you are like most people, you probably have some room in your schedule to book your procedure.

3. You Can Enjoy Your Results in Time for Summer

Breast augmentation will immediately enhance the size and shape of your breasts. However, that does not mean that you will be ready to don a bikini or wear that low-cut dress just yet.

It takes time for swelling and bruising to subside after surgery. There is also a period where your implants will gradually move into their final position.

Mother and daughter
You know that you want to do something about your stomach. After all, you are tired of dealing with a range of postpartum issues that are keeping you from looking and feeling your very best. In this situation, a
tummy tuck might be the perfect solution. Here are three signs that you may benefit from this popular procedure that is used to achieve a slimmer and more toned waistline.

1. Your Abdominal Muscles are Weak or Separated

Pregnancy puts a lot of strain on your abdominal muscles. It is common to experience weakness in these muscles or muscle separation after they stretch to accommodate your baby.

Often, abdominal muscle separation causes a visible pooch or bulge in the middle of the belly. It can be distressing to experience this and other symptoms of diastasis recti long after delivery. Fortunately, a tummy tuck often incorporates muscle repair to give you a flatter stomach, improve your core strength, and help with issues such as back pain and urinary incontinence.

2. You Have Sagging Skin and Stretch Marks

Sagging skin has a lot in common with a rubber band that has been stretched too far. It lacks the elasticity it needs to spring back into its original shape. This can be incredibly frustrating.

Fortunately, a tummy tuck removes and tightens excess skin. It can achieve much more dramatic results than any cream or non-surgical treatment. As a bonus, it also helps reduce or remove stretch marks and lower abdominal scars that are located in the treatment area.

3. You Are Struggling to Lose Excess Fat

A tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery. However, it can be a great way to eliminate those stubborn pockets of fat that have resisted your best diet and fitness efforts. The tummy tuck procedure can help restore a flatter and smoother contour to your waistline after pregnancy.

Woman after breast augmentation
Exceptional breast augmentation results don’t happen by accident. They’re the result of surgical expertise, careful planning, and good aftercare. If you’re considering breast augmentation, follow these three tips to make sure you’ll love your new look.

1. Find a Great Plastic Surgeon

Choosing the right plastic surgeon is the most important thing you can do to set yourself up for a successful breast augmentation. While many surgeons perform this popular procedure, not all of them have the skills, experience, and aesthetic eye needed to offer a good outcome.

Dr. Gregory Brucato is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. That means he has completed years of additional training and meets high standards for patient care. We invite you to read his reviews and view before and after photos of his breast augmentation patients.

2. Choose the Right Implants

Once you’ve picked your surgeon, it’s time to select your breast implants. Breast implants are incredibly customizable. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures, and materials.

If navigating all these options to find your perfect match feels overwhelming, don’t worry. Dr. Brucato will work with you to pick breast implants that work for your goals, body type, and lifestyle. He will also explain your choices for implant and incision placement.

3. Follow the Pre-Op and Post-Op Instructions

Don’t underestimate the importance of diligent preparation and aftercare. What you do before and after breast augmentation surgery can have a big impact on your results.

We’ll give you the tools you need to achieve an ideal outcome. When you receive pre-op and post-op instructions from our practice, be sure to follow them to the letter. Remember that they were written with your safety and satisfaction in mind.

Cosmetic breast surgery can rejuvenate your figure and help you love the way you look. There are several great options available depending on your concerns and goals. Here are a few things to think about when deciding between breast augmentation and a breast lift:

  • Breast size: If you want to increase your breast size or restore the volume that you lost due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, breast augmentation could be a great fit. It uses saline or silicone implants to create a fuller-looking chest. Breast lift surgery, on the other hand, does not increase breast size.

  • Breast symmetry: Breast augmentation is a great way to achieve symmetry if one of your breasts is smaller than the other. However, if your breasts are uneven in height, a breast lift may be a better solution.

  • Nipple position: You may be a great candidate for a breast lift if your nipples point downward or fall below your breast crease. A breast lift will restore the nipple and areola to a higher, more proportionate position. It can also reduce the size of stretched areolas.

  • Excess or sagging skin: Breast sagging is a common concern that most women will experience eventually. It can be caused by any number of things, including pregnancy, gravity, heredity, and normal aging. A breast lift eliminates excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to enhance your breast contour.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to choose between these two popular procedures. A combination breast lift and breast augmentation can help you enjoy a more youthful breast appearance. Not only will it elevate the position of your breasts, but it will also enhance their size and create attractive upper fullness.

Don’t be surprised if you come into our office for one procedure and our plastic surgeon suggests a combination approach. It might be necessary to achieve your goals!

For the most part, no one should plan for their breast implants to last a lifetime. Most breast implants can be expected to perform satisfactorily for anywhere from 10-25 years. Outside of issues of wear-and-tear and performance, you may decide to replace your breast implants for cosmetic reasons, like increasing size.

Breast Implants Tend To Last 10+ Years

There is no way to predetermine the expiration date of your breast implants because there really isn’t an expiration date. The implants could last for many, many years – even decades – without your needing to revise or replace them. Having said that, most breast implant manufacturers provide a 10-year warranty, which is why a decade is often the rule of thumb many people rely on. But it’s certainly possible that you may want to revise your implants before the decade-mark or after; it’s completely individual.

Reasons to Replace or Remove Breast Implants

How long your breast implants last really depends on a number of factors. First of all, if and when some issue related to the function, form or safety of the implants arises, that issue must be corrected. Then, if there is some cosmetic or appearance-related reason you voluntarily elect to replace your breast implants. For the most part, breast implant replacement may be recommended:

  • To change the size of the implants and breasts (increase or decrease)
  • To correct capsular contracture or another complication
  • To replace ruptured breast implants
  • To replace breast implants that are visibly rippled
  • To revise results once asymmetry appears with age
  • To revise breast implants that have rotated or become mal-positioned

There are other possible reasons. Working with Dr. Brucato, you’ll be able to monitor your breast augmentation results and follow up should you have any questions about revision.

Saline vs. Silicone: Is There a Difference in Longevity?

There is no inherent reason why one type of breast implant would last longer than the other. There’s no evidence that silicone fill is longer-lasting than saline, or vice versa. One way they do differ is in the detectability of a rupture or leak, which is a situation requiring removal and replacement.

It is visibly obvious when a saline implant leaks because the breast will deflate. It will look very different from the other breast containing an intact saline implant. A silicone implant that ruptures maintains its shape because the silicone gel maintains its shape, so you are unlikely to see that anything is amiss. Ruptures should be addressed immediately.

While they differ in this way, one is not more likely to rupture than the other. As you compare breast implant options, know that either type is likely to last around 10-25 years, but then you may need to replace them before that time or wait until after that time.

Just because breast enhancement is very popular does not mean it is right for every woman seeking to enlarge her bustline.

Back to the numbers for a moment: Perhaps one of the most informative studies was completed in 2013. It found that 98 percent of women who underwent breast enlargement were satisfied with the procedure. These patients said the procedure either met or exceeded their expectations. The study included 225 women and was published in the medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

These patients also reported improvement to their quality of life following this breast procedure. In fact, 92 percent said their self-esteem improved. Before surgery, 86 percent reported feeling self-conscious about their breasts. After surgery, only 13 percent reported still feeling self-conscious about their breasts.

Long-Term Value and Lasting Results

If you’re asking yourself if breast enhancement is “worth it,” you’re probably thinking about cost, the surgery itself, and how long the results will last. These factors are best weighed with the guidance of our experienced plastic surgeon. Dr. Brucato provides you with clear and straightforward information so you can make a decision. Here are a few things to note:

  • Breasts implants can last for many years, even decades, without needing replacement
  • You will receive a complete cost quote at the time of your consultation
  • Financing options through CareCredit are available

Every woman considering breast augmentation must make this choice herself – will the procedure pay off in terms of improved self-confidence, better quality of life and greater personal satisfaction? Dr. Brucato has seen first-hand how rewarding this procedure can be, but he wants to help you decide if it’s right for you.

This highly versatile procedure makes it possible to have the breast size, shape and overall appearance you’ve always wanted. If you’ve been considering this procedure for yourself, the next step is to find out if you’re a good candidate. Will Breast Augmentation Meet Your Expectations?

Breast enlargement may be right for you if you’d like to change any of the following:

  • Small breasts
  • Breasts that do not match in size, shape or position (asymmetry)
  • Breasts lacking fullness near the top
  • Breasts that are not as round or big as you’d like
  • Breasts lacking volume

To see examples of results, please visit Dr. Brucato’s before-and-after gallery.

Breast lift surgery – or “mastopexy” – is another popular option for women seeking to rejuvenate their breasts. This procedure lifts and re-shapes breasts that are sagging and deflated. Breast lift surgery addresses stretched areolas, lack of upper-breast fullness, and nipples that have descended below the breast crease. In most instances, breast lift surgery cannot increase fullness on its own; however, it can be combined with the placement of implants if you wish to increase size and eliminate sagging tissue.

How Your Health Influences Breast Augmentation Candidacy

You and Dr. Brucato will discuss your medical history and current health, including:

  • Whether you smoke or use any tobacco products
  • Your current overall health
  • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Your age, specifically whether your breasts and body have reached full maturity (usually age 18-22)

We make sure your body is in good shape to undergo a cosmetic procedure, which will include anesthesia and a period of recovery in the days following. Our staff provides complete pre-op and aftercare instructions to set you up for success during this experience. Breast augmentation has the power to lift your spirits and change the way you carry yourself; Dr. Brucato wants you to love your new look, and he makes sure this procedure is a great match.

Cost and Financing

Being a good candidate for breast enlargement includes financial preparedness for the procedure. At the time of your consultation, after you have discussed a plan with Dr. Brucato, we provide you with the cost estimate for your procedure. Because breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, it is not typically covered by health insurance policies. For that reason, many patients are interested to know their financing and payment options, both of which we will explain in full.

At Brucato Plastic Surgery Center, we do accept financing plans through CareCredit. The way it works is you apply for one of the CareCredit plans we accept, some of which offer 0% APR or low APR. Then you use your CareCredit account just like a credit card for breast surgery. Ask our staff for more information.
